In this laboratory experiment, we conducted a comparative analysis of the mapping and 3D scanning functionalities of the Mavic 2 Pro and the Skydio 2+. Utilizing Pix4D Capture, we executed a series of flights, encompassing both 2D mapping and 3D object scanning, with the Mavic 2 Pro. This data collection process was subsequently juxtaposed with the inherent capabilities of the Skydio 2+ in order to evaluate the ease of use and data collection efficiency between the two platforms.
In the course of our platform comparison, it became evident that the Mavic offers a superior experience in terms of manual control and flight handling. However, its autonomous flight capabilities are notably surpassed by the Skydio. Additionally, it is worth noting that the software employed by the Skydio for conducting scans surpasses Pix4D in terms of performance and usability. The Skydio system facilitates a streamlined flight setup process and affords significantly greater flexibility in customizing scan parameters, thereby enhancing overall efficiency and control in data collection.
